Napkins, Anyone?

If you have an extensive fabric stash, making a few napkins is one way to use up some of that fabric. Christmas before last, my daughter asked for a bunch of them which were quite well received. This year, I decided to add to my napkin stash. We try not to use paper towels as napkins.

The other night, I rummaged through some boxes of fabric that haven't seen the light of day for awhile and made my selection. After washing and ironing, the cutting began. I have a small stack of ready cut pieces for napkins. It's my go to project for times when I don't need to use up any more brain cells!

I did all mitred corners, which I particularly like and are easy to do. To find out how to make these for yourself, check out my other blog for the tutorial

Here's four napkins that I just finished! They are sort of colour coordinated. In any case, they call for Spring! Aren't you tired of the snow and cold weather! I know I am.

I will try to post on both blogs. The new one is still a challenge as it requires quite a learning curve, but hopefully, before too long, I won't have to ask for assistance. In any case, the old brain is getting a good run for the money, which is a good thing as we get older.

Here's a few non-napkin links for your enjoyment pleasure!

 Enjoy!!

The inside of my Embroidery Machine!

Where does the time go! March already! The bottom part of my studio (concrete) had the spray foam insulation done yesterday which meant we had to vacate the house for 24 hours. Everything was held up on the insulation. So now the work can continue with drywall, heating, lighting etc! Can't wait.

I have a few photos of my Brother Embroidery machine waiting for a new motor. The motor is a small one considering the size of this beast. Have you ever seen the insides of one? Have a look:

The motor is behind the mother board

Travelling This Summer?

The weather around here certainly doesn't seem like spring. It was freezing today. However (wishful thinking), it can't stay cold for ever. Soon, school will be out and families will be thinking of road trips. Well, I found this FREE pattern / tutorial for a car organizer. I'm sure you can custom this one to suit your situation.

I also found an easy Zipper Phone Pouch Tutorial. Another great travel companion.

Stockings

My mother made our Christmas stockings from red flannelette and hand embroidered our names with green wool. I still have mine. Santa usually had a special surprise in the toe of the stocking.  It wasn't usually anything expensive. However, I do remember one year, getting a compass in the toe. I was in Girl Guides at the time and it came in handy.

Here's some links for you to check:

Misty Monday

It's a foggy but warm day. A good one to spend at the sewing machine! I hope someone out there managed to get a bit of stitching done. Yesterday was my day for doing that (more on that later)!

Today I'm going to post a few blogs to view. I haven't done that in awhile. Enjoy. . .

Len's Mill Store

While visiting London, Ontario, I paid a visit to Len's Mill Store. They wouldn't permit any photos to be taken. I entered the shop and didn't know which way to turn as there was everything under the sun, from clothing, food, dry goods, tools, crafty stuff, yarns and fabrics to furniture.

After looking from left to right and all around, I discovered the yarns and accessories / patterns to the right. Yes, I did purchase a few decorative balls of yarn for surface embellishment. Next to the yarns, were the decorator fabrics. A quick walk through this area brought me to the quilting section. All the cottons were arranged by theme such as cats, dogs, coffee, tea, wildlife, butterflies, Asian, batiks, . . . you get the idea. Again, I made a few small purchases of batiks and glittery fabrics.

There was everything you could ever need for sewing and quilting, including tools and other notions (some of the things were very dated, while others were new) - a one stop shopping experience! It was very warm in the building as there was no air conditioning so I didn't linger too long. The outside temperature was 32C and climbing and it seemed just as warm inside!

Happy Birthday!!

Today's post is for all those celebrating a birthday! I don't usually blog about personal stuff but this is an exception. My granddaughter is one year old today. She lives a long way from here.

When I was searching for birthday specific things (free patterns) to quilt, sew or stitch, I couldn't find a lot so I included a few crafty things as well.

Book Review # 3

Vivacious Curvy QuiltsVivacious Curvy Quilts by Dianne S. Hire is another book I've added to my collection. I'm not a quilter of quilts but I do like this book for its nontraditional, unlikely quilt shapes. Dianne demonstrates template-free ways to cut, sew and combine curvy pieced blocks into spectacular quilted pieces. There are lots of coloured photos and illustrations to accompany the easy to follow text. For some reason, I have always been drawn to quilts with curves and have several other books on the subject.

Harry Potter

wizard hat clip artI received the Harry Potter DVD's for Christmas and just finished watching #4. It's interesting to see the characters as they get older. Using the theme of magic and Harry Potter, I googled and found a few things of interest. Not that I'm about to do any of the projects, but I thought someone might find it useful especially if you have a H P fan at home.

Here's what I found:
H P Paper Piecing Project of Doom - quilting for Harry Potter fans
Sew Hooked
Janice Ferguson Sews - interesting embroidery (scroll down)
The Leaky Lounge - embroidery

Crafts and stuff

I just received the Eastern Edge Quilters (EEQ) February newsletter. One of the sites it recommends is Cut Out & Keep, which shares step-by-step craft tutorials. I clicked Sewing and found lots of stuff. Last month, one of our guild members used the Tsumami Kanzashi Flower in her project.

Now I need more time to check out the 'stuff' on this web site!

Circles and Curves

Our small part of the world is waiting (not happily) for hurricane Igor to land on its shores. Igor is forecast to have heavy winds and 110mm of rain overnight and tomorrow. It's pouring out as I write. Let's hope the power stays on as I'm watching some of the shows from The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims. Several months ago they had a special for 6 months of viewing and I subscribed to it. I must say, I've enjoyed watching the various shows, some more to my style of work than others, but interesting all the same.

Tonight I watched episode 704 - Cricles, Curves, and Chocolate with Dale Fleming. She demonstrated how to do stitched curves her way as well as making the Six-Minute Circle. HGTV has a tutorial on making this six minute circle. It has possibilities for doing lots of different shapes. Dale's book, Pieced Curves So Simple, is in my bookshelf! It's a great book with lots of easy to follow photos.

YouTube has lots of video demos on sewing curves.

Getting Organized

It's a very rainy here today. I just finished some book work and that got me thinking about projects to help with organization, whether it's in the office, around the house or sewing/studio. Recycle where you can. I used to collect Pringle chip tubes, clean them out, and they would hold interfacing and other sewing stuff that was rolled (short stuff). I've been known to save detergent boxes, cut them to hold magazines. That was before my husband got asthma and anything with a scent had to be discarded. However with the abundance of Dollar Stores, it's much easier to get plastic storage containers of all kinds. But if you still wish to make your own 'stuff', here's a few things to do:

Purse Organizer
Denim organizer

Organizer Folder: it's called a Cookie Sale Organizer

Check out this Tutorial

This evening, I've been working on several fibre lace scarves. These are special orders and have to be completed by early December. While taking a break, I came across this tutorial on making a sewing organizer. Since christmas is only a few weeks away, it might make a nice gift for that special friend.
