My Journey into the World of Textile / Fibre Art

Last Monday afternoon, I did a power point presentation as well as a Show & Tell of my art work at the Mahone Bay Quilt Guild. I focused on my journey of creating art from textiles and fibres.

More From The Quilt Show

I spent some time yesterday working on the photos I took at the Cabot Quilters' 2012 Show. I then proceeded to post them on flickr only to find they went over my limit for free space which is 200 photos. Since I want to keep the flickr space for my own 'stuff', I took them off again. Any suggestions for an alternate free space to post these photos would be appreciated. In the meantime, enjoy more from the show.

It's Show Time!!

Today I went to see A Quintal of Quilts, an Exhibition, Sale and Auction, presented by the Cabot Quilters' Guild of St. John's, NL. There were almost 200 quilted pieces on exhibit and I took photos of every piece. Half way through, I had to leave to recharge my battery - literally! I thought the battery was fully charged and ready to go. No such luck! I forgot about all the outside shots I had taken of the spring flowers.

The quilts you are viewing today are just a taste of the beautiful pieces at the show and are in no particular order. Over the next month or so, you will see more of them. I will probably put all the photos of this show into an album on my flickr site. However, this will take time, as I have to process each photo.
Anyway, here are a few pieces for you to see.

Sketchbook 01

I did sign up for the sketchbook challenge. I have to admit that drawing isn't my strong point, although when I take my time, I can copy fairly well. Here's the first thing I did in this year's sketchbook. Yes, I do keep journals, sketchbooks or notebooks of the work I do. However, they usually hold a lot more than just sketches such as samples of dyed fabric, stitching / experiments, lists, recipes for mixing paints, dyes, etc. A few years back I was glad I kept a journal as I had forgotten how I did something. I looked through my journals and found it. Since then, I usually do a write-up for anything new I do.

Highly Prized is the January Theme for the sketchbook challenge. My page above lists many of the things in my studio which I highly prize!

Sketchbook Challenge

I did sign up to participate in the Sketchbook Challenge.
A while ago (year or two - not sure) I did an on-line course with Sharon B. from Pin Tangle called Studio Journal: A Designers Workhorse. It was the first on-line course I've done. It was quite a good one and I would recommend it if anyone was interested in that sort of course.
I have been looking through my journal as I had forgotten about some of the things covered in the six week course. Some of the pages from my journal are here on flickr.
January's theme is Highly Prized.

Block of the Month - Snowbound

Bunny Hill Designs has a Block of the Month freebie pattern for you to applique. It's called Snow Bound. If your guild is having an auction or challenge, these blocks would make wonderful wall hangings. You could even do a quilt using the different blocks! The best part is the fact that you can take a block to do anywhere. Check out the blocks on the Flickr Site. Quilters have been busy!
Tip
This tip is one I use for any needle work project. Instead of inserting my needle in the fabric when I'm done stitching or just stopping for a minute, I have two small earth magnets attached to the front and the back of the fabric where I lay the needle. It is quite strong and I have never lost a needle. In fact, it can even hold a pair of small scissors when necessary. I got my magnets at Lee Valley Tools but check out your local craft store too.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2010

After yesterday's photo disaster at the quilt show, I decided to wait and get some decent shots of View From the Rooms. I will also use those photos (rather my husband will) to create another blank greeting card set. More on that later.

A few days ago, I came across the Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2010 . To date, there are 677 participants (scroll down the page). Each quilter is listed by name and linked back to their web site or blog. If you have some free time (just joking), then spend it visiting some of the sites to see their quilts. It's very interesting.
