Spring???

The beginning of SPRING in Newfoundland!

My brother, Don, makes fabulous stained glass. He sent this photo to me of this beautiful butterfly. It's going to be awhile before we see the real thing around here.

Have you ever thought of using stained glass patterns for your quilted wall hangings, hand stitching? There's lots of inspiration out there. Check these below:
Enjoy!

Butterflies

Butterflies! Yes, it's about time to bring a bit of colour to the east coast of Canada. Why not flowers? Well, I found a blog hop (that's now over) about butterflies that you can still visit. The hop is mostly jewellery but I decided to do some extra searching for other butterfly related sites. Have fun and remember, I am not responsible for all the time you spend checking out these sites (GRIN)!!

Here they are by blog / website title:
I have lots more links but this should do for now. You just might find something to make for summer!
Enjoy!!

Papillon

I have a little four legged creature visiting me this month. Pongo, my sister's dog, is a Papillon. Papillon is the French word for butterfly. Need I say more! The following links will have something to do with butterflies so enjoy! At the moment, our weather has been too wet and cold for butterflies to be out and about. Maybe I need to create some for inside.

To get you started, I found some free butterfly colouring pages and drawings.
This one is for inspiration. The colours are stunning. More inspiration.

Gardening!

Today was sunny! However, the temperature was nothing to write home about as it was rather cool when the wind blew around the side of the house. Rain is in the forecast for the next week so I took advantage of the sunshine to work in my garden. We are moving our shed so I have to give up a few flower beds. Thankfully, I can transplant some of my larger plants to new beds out front.

I no longer own this landscape but it is still a favorite of mine. It has over a 100 hand embroidered daisies attached to the foreground.

To celebrate gardens, here are a few quilting projects that I found. Enjoy!

Appliqué Patterns

Here's one of my machine appliqué Fantasy Fish. I love using batiks as the colours are so bright.

As promised in the previous post, I've made a list of a few sites that have free patterns for Appliqué. Have fun checking them out.
Make Baby Stuff is just that, stuff for baby!
The Stitching Cow has a simple house to do.
Lots of applique patterns at the Sacred Spiral.
Bella Online has some wonderful applique patterns that Judie Bellingham found on her web travels. Something like I'm doing.
A simple butterfly at About.com: DIY Fashion
Wee Folk Art has applique done in felt but that doesn't mean you can't use cotton. In fact, check out the whole web site as there are lots of other patterns too.
Have fun with these!
If you like cats, there is a pattern on Craftown.
Block Crazy has free patchwork and applique patterns.
Teddlywinks has a couple of bear patterns to put on a small wall hanging or mini-quilt.
Applique pitchers in a log cabin quilt.
Welcome spring with this flower applique. More flowers here!

Butterflies

Back in October, 2009, I wrote about The Butterfly Project that the St. John's Guild of Embroiderers' was involved with. Well, here is a picture of the butterflies collected to date. If you look back in the blog, you will see that we have added to the collection. Some of the round ones on the top row and two on the second row were embroidered by members of the youth guild.

Templates

This has been a very busy day. Unfortunately, I have not been in my studio until late evening and then only to search the web. However, I did find some free templates for using with card stock. BUT why not cover the card stock with fabric to make a small artist trading card envelope, a butterfly card, or a candy box. There are lots of templates to choose from. Have fun!

The Butterfly Project

I belong to the St. John's Guild of Embroiderers'. The summer challenge 2009 was to embroider a butterfly. 1,500,00 children perished in the Holocaust and in an effort to remember them, the Holocaust Museum, Houston, Texas, is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies. The butterflies are scheduled for exhibit during Spring 2012. The following poem was the inspiration for making butterflies. The picture below shows some of the butterflies made by members of the guild.

The Butterfly
The last, the vey last,
So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.
perhaps if the sun's tears would sing
against a white stone...

Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly 'way up high.
it went away I'm ure
because itwished
to kiss the world good-bye.

For seven week I've lived in here.
Penned up inside this ghetto.
But I have found what I love here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut branches in the court
Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don't live in here, in the ghetto.
