Working . . .

This past week I have been getting ready for the 'fantastic fabric' workshop I'm teaching on Thursday. I also started and finished 20 credit card / business card holders using my 'fantastic fabric'. There are also more 3-D fish in the works. Now for a look at some embellished textile work by other textile artists. Check these out:

Shopping Locally for Christmas

Today I visited another Christmas Craft Fair here in St. John's. At these events, I always look for unique, well made items. I wasn't disappointed! A young sewer, Susan Riley, had a small booth displaying her one-of-a-kind creations made from recycled leather, clothing, fabrics and hardware. As a sewer myself, I was impressed with her work. Her sewing and designs were quite nice and I purchased two pieces for Christmas gifts.

February 14th.

Valentine's Day, according to the flower shops, is their best day of the year for sales! However, Saint Valentine's Day (shortened to Valentine's Day) is a holiday observed on February 14 honouring one or more early Christian martyrs. It is traditionally a day in which lovers express their love for each other by presenting gifts of flowers and / or chocolates and sending cards. Quilters and stitchers often like to mark the month of February by having special heart shaped 'stuff' around either as a hanging, coasters, table topper or small quilt. Me, I'm not into making things for every holiday that comes along. I'd rather just have something to designate the four seasons and Christmas. However, I did find some Valentine projects for you to consider. Most of them are freebies. Enjoy!

Cup Cakes

Robert Kaufman Sweet Tooth Cupcake Petal Pink Fabric
The Cup Cake theme seems to be everywhere these days! I read that cup cakes are even taking the place of the traditional wedding cake. They have been used for years as treats for kids parties so why not weddings. I remember having them at parties when I was a child. Because this is such a popular theme, I did do a journal cover with a cupcake motif. But that is for another day.

These two fabrics are from the Robert Kaufman cupcake collection.

In my research for cup cake themed items, I found some interesting stuff. Some you might like while others you may wonder about. Anyway, have fun - you never know when an occasion will arise that cries out for a cup cake!

Journal Covers

I decided to make a cover for a journal a couple of days ago. This one is quite small as I want it to fit in a purse. It is similar to the ones shown here with my fantasy fish. I did find a few sites with journal covers.
  • If you want to have a place for a pen or pencil with your cover, check out this one. Even though the free pattern isn't available anymore, the picture is helpful. You just have to be a bit creative!

Evening Purses

Back in April, I blogged about Tote Bags & Purses. A couple of years ago, I made a couple of evening purses for a wearable art exhibit. I designed several types. The base fabrics are all made with lots of decorative yarns, threads and glitzy fabrics. The five shown here have shoulder straps that are tucked inside the bag. They all have magnetic snap closures. All the purses have detachable art pins so that you can wear them on a jacket or sweater (if you so desire). I thought that the wearable art pin was a unique addition. After the show, I decided to make more of these for the Fine Art & Craft Fair here in St. John's. Some of these evening purses were also on exhibit in Korea last fall.
The black and red shoulder purse has a fold over flap with a magnetic snap. I made a series of different fold over flaps. Most of the shoulder straps are hand made as well. This particular purse is one that I kept for myself as it matches several of my outfits.

Now for the free patterns (not mine)! I came across a textile site by Linda Matthews with lots of free purse, tote & handbag patterns and tutorials. It's worth a look.

Soutache

Soutache is a charming little shop on 2125 North Damen Ave, Chicago, which specializes in embellishments: ribbons, buttons, feathers & flowers. They have also introduced ribbon embroidery classes so that students learn basic stitches in order to create charming keepsakes and gifts. I did find some purse accessories including feet at this shop.

Getting Organized

It's a very rainy here today. I just finished some book work and that got me thinking about projects to help with organization, whether it's in the office, around the house or sewing/studio. Recycle where you can. I used to collect Pringle chip tubes, clean them out, and they would hold interfacing and other sewing stuff that was rolled (short stuff). I've been known to save detergent boxes, cut them to hold magazines. That was before my husband got asthma and anything with a scent had to be discarded. However with the abundance of Dollar Stores, it's much easier to get plastic storage containers of all kinds. But if you still wish to make your own 'stuff', here's a few things to do:

Denim organizer

Sewing Portfolio

A couple of years ago, I designed and created a Sewing Portfolio (scroll down) which was exhibited at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Member's Exhibit, Devon House. That particular piece was sold at the gallery opening. The piece featured here is one I made for myself.

The flap has two magnetic purse closures to keep it closed. I put a full size pocket with flap on the back for note paper/patterns.

The pockets for the inside are made from vinyl window screen bought from the local hardware store. This product sews up very nicely. In fact, I've embroidered the edges of several pockets. This piece was a bit of a challenge as I wanted to have places for a small cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter, scissors, thread, glue, pin cushion, needles, note pads etc. I'm pleased with the design however, after using it, I realized that I should have put flaps on all the pockets as things do occasionally fall out of them.

Here are some free sewing project patterns that I found while surfing the web:

Tote Bags & Purses

At the April meeting of the Eastern Edge Quilters, two of the ladies brought their new tote bags for Show and Tell. What a superb job they did. Of course, I had  to find out more about them! The pattern is called the Professional Tote Bag by The Creative Thimble. You will also find three free patterns on this site: Drawstring Bag, Grocery Bag and Accessory Bags.

My search also brought me to Henrietta's Handbags & Purse Patterns. This one is well worth visiting! I found a link at this site for free bag patterns called Purse Patterns. Now, who can refuse clicking on something that says FREE!!! Now all I need is to have the time to look at them and then maybe make some.

I think this will keep you busy especially on those nights when you simply can't get to sleep!

Mother's Day Ideas

My mother is 88 years old. At her stage in life, she is trying to get rid of things. For presents, she wants only 'stuff' she can wear or eat!. Well, a number of years ago, I was at my wits end as to what to get her. I had been making small fabric fish for my art work and it suddenly dawned on me that she has collected small pins to wear on her clothes for years. That sudden inspiration lead to a line of wearable art pins(scroll down).  I make some images by stitching them by free motion on my sewing machine. Others have been designed and converted to stitch for my embroidery machine. Needless to say, my mother usually gets # 1 of each new design. Here's a few samples of my pins:

Here's some other ideas for gifts to make for mom (or yourself):

Happy Birthday Joan

Today is my sister's birthday. She was the receipent of a Pisci Fantasticus. For me, it is often difficult to know what to get that special person. However, I do know that people love receiving gifts you make yourself. Sometimes that gift may be something baked in your kitchen, stitched by hand or by sewing machine. I found a few things that might be suitable for a sister, mom, aunt, granny or friend.

Here is a nice reversible placemat or centerpiece mat for a dessert or candy. A clutch purse that's simple to make would be perfect for a special sister. Check out a travel shoe bag and cosmetic bag. For the person who sews (or for yourself), here is an armchair sewing organizer. For those who live far away, why not make a felt cake (yes, you read it correctly). I just had to include this one. Sorry Joan, you get a real chocolate cake when you get home on Monday!! A kimono needle roll looks interesting, also this water bottle tote. Tea anyone! Find out about the insulated tea cozy, oven mitt and table runner. There, these projects should get you motivated.
