New Pendants

During the summer, I did work on some new pendants. As you can see, I was into flowers. In all, I finished about 30 (not all flowers). They are now ready for the local market and Christmas Craft Fair. My pendants are light weight, will fit in an envelope, and are inexpensive to mail. They make wonderful gifts and each is one-of-a-kind!

For those of you visiting for the first time, Welcome to my part of the world. My name is Judy Cooper. I am a retired primary school teacher who now creates one-of-a-kind textile / fibre art. My complete bio can be found HERE and my artist statement HERE.

I have received awards for my work and several pieces belong to the City of St. John's, NL and to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. At the moment, I am creating fibre art pendants and some new Shimmer Ornaments (scroll to the previous post).

Besides having a place to show my art and some of the techniques I use, I often write about other artist's work and link to their web sites. One of the other things I like to do is find tutorials and patterns for all kinds of textile / fibre art (usually freebies). Since 2009, I have blogged about a lot of interesting 'stuff". Quidi Vidi Pewter

Today, I'd like to introduce you to another Newfoundland artist, Ray Cox of Quidi Vidi Pewter. Actually, Ray is a pewter-smith from Connecticut who came to Newfoundland in 1972 and stayed so he is now officially from here!!

Ray creates hand wrought pewter in original, one-of-a-kind designs. His "Natural Colour" motifs include whales and whale tails, trees and the mummer series. By playing with the iridescent colours that appear in the metal, Ray creates his own very unique designs. Three dimensional art pieces include "Air Cast" pewter bowls.

In fact, one of his cast pewter bowls was given to Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles as a wedding present by then Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson.

New Wearable Art Pins

I just finished a new set of needle felted wearable art pins. These are embellished with Sulky Sliver threads, decorative yarns and beads. Recycled leather is used on the back. Each is one-of-a-kind and numbered.

Shopping Locally for Christmas

Today I visited another Christmas Craft Fair here in St. John's. At these events, I always look for unique, well made items. I wasn't disappointed! A young sewer, Susan Riley, had a small booth displaying her one-of-a-kind creations made from recycled leather, clothing, fabrics and hardware. As a sewer myself, I was impressed with her work. Her sewing and designs were quite nice and I purchased two pieces for Christmas gifts.

This and That

I haven't posted much about what I have been doing in my studio lately but I have been busy. I did start another art piece which will be my entry for the Comfort and Joy Exhibit at Devon House in December   The Eastern Edge Quilt Guild asked me to do a short presentation at the November meeting on how to construct fabric 'clap board' for houses. As a result, I'm using lots of clap board in my new piece. Making 'clap board' is relatively easy. Buildings that are front on are the quickest to do. However, when angles are introduced, the fun begins!!

Whenever I start a project, I experiment with various methods of construction. This is time consuming but very rewarding. I usually achieve what I set out to do. For example, I try to make window and door frames with the least amount of bulk.

In this last photo, the door is laid on the top of the 'clap board' but in the end, I cut a hole in the wall for the door so that it is flush with the walls. Does that make sense? I'll post more photos when it is finished.
