The DesBrisay Museum, in Bridgewater, is having a Square Show! The museum will host a collection of work produced by artists from across Nova Scotia. This show will feature 8" x 8" artwork in a variety of mediums, including watercolour, textile art, oil . . . ! This show is from August 3 to September 7.
Here's my piece. It doesn't have a title yet but it will come to me later today (I hope)!!
I used hand painted fabric that was still packed away from our move to NS, waiting to be used. A combination of free-motion stitching, hand embroidery, digital printing onto silk for the rocks and hand applique, were used on this piece.
Close-ups
Enjoy!

Susan Lee Studios
Time to highlight another Newfoundland artist, Susan Lee Stephen, jewellery designer. Susan works with silver, semi-precious stones, copper, bronze, brass and sometimes textiles to create very unique sculptural jewellery pieces. To read more about Susan's work, click on the link above.
I visited Devon House this afternoon to see the latest gallery show, Elemental Nexus. Susan is one of the featured artists. Her work is incredible! Such attention to detail . . . You can also view some of the show pieces on her web site.
To see some other art pieces, check out Susan's profile in the Metal Arts Guild of Canada and her Etsy Shop.

Road Trip
Last week, we took a few days and went to Gander. From there, we visited Twillingate, where I have some of my smaller pieces of art at the Driftwood Gallery. It was a cold, drizzly day so it wasn't really ideal for taking photos. We did visit the Longpoint Lighthouse which is located 331 feet above sea level on top of a cliff named Devil's Cove Head in Twillingate. The view, in good weather, would be spectacular. Here's a few photos of the lighthouse. Aren't the spiral steps interesting! We found out that this is one of the few manned lighthouses left around the island.

Art Knowledge News
Art Knowledge News is an on-line art news magazine which is updated daily. I signed up for this about a week ago. Since getting back from my England trip where I visited lots of museums and art galleries, I can continue to peek into galleries around the world to view some more spectacular works of art. Of course, I could do that at any time, but with this site coming to me daily, I'm seeing things I probably wouldn't have thought about. Also they have a list of links that is easy to follow. I'm also following them on Twitter.
The photo was taken at the Tate Modern Museum, London. I did not record the artist's name. If anyone knows it, I would appreciate you letting me know and I will update this page.

Surface Design Association
I've just joined the Surface Design Association. This association has approximately 4000 current members. 'Surface Design encompasses the coloring, patterning, and structuring of fiber and fabric. This involves creative exploration of processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching, embellishing, quilting, weaving, knitting, felting, and papermaking.'
'The mission of Surface Design Association is to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities as well as the general public.'
The Gallery and Digital Image Library are very inspiring! Also check out the member websites. The site map provides a simple way to navigate around the site.

Forte Framing and Gallery
My daughter, Jill and her husband, Jude, have just started a new business in Chicago, Forte Framing and Gallery. It is located at 2301 W North Ave in the neighborhood of Wicker Park. We were there for the official opening on July 2nd. We wish them well in their new venture. Their web site is under construction but the title page with loco is in place here. While visiting there this summer, I was amazed at some of the older buildings in Chicago as many of them have very decorative fronts like the one their business occupies. This one is art deco style. The front entrance to the shop is right on the corner.
If you look real close at the third picture, you will see a small sample of my art work, which is on display there for the summer. One of the things they hope to do besides framing pictures, is to promote artists and their work. So if you are in the area, please stop by and have a look at their gallery.

Busy Day
This afternoon I took a walk around Wicker Park and Bucktown, Chicago. Needless to say, I am tuckered out and in need of a relaxing evening. Hopefully there will be no thunderstorms tonight. I was in and out of many shops today but made purchases at only two and those were wool shops. First, I left my daughter's and son-in-law's new framing and art gallery (to be officially opened on July 2nd) and walked for ages to get to Nina, a well-knit shop on West Division Street. This is a beautiful store with lots of space as you will see when you visit their site. Before getting to the other knitting place, I explored lots of other shops on the way. The Knitting Workshop is located on N. Damen Avenue. This shop had some of the ribbon yarns I use for my fibre lace scarves so I purchased a couple of colours I don't have as well as a couple of glitzy balls of yarn. You can see two of my scarves to the left. If you are a knitter and are in the area, you will need to visit both these shops!
