Shorelines and Sundaes

Last evening, my daughter, Jill, had a showing of new work in Mahone Bay, NS. Shorelines and Sundaes was an Art and Ice Cream Pairing at Get The Scoop. A very unique flavor was created to compliment Jill's 'delectable' art. It was delicious! I understand some very nice liquor was used to soak the cherries.

Have a peek at the new pieces:

Clouds and Cream: an Art Show

My daughter, Jill's art show, Clouds and Cream, opened this evening in Mahone Bay at Get the Scoop! A special ice cream flavor was created just for the show. It was made from a combination of mandarin oranges, marshmallow, and a liquor from the Caribbean. Delicious!!!! Thanks, Lisa (owner and ice cream maker)

Here are the eight new pieces: Blueberry Truffle, Carmel Curl, Cloud Berry, Dreamsickle Drizzle, Mango Sherbet, Maritime Mist, Moon Mint and Vanilla Parfait. Aren't the names delightful! Thanks go to Jill's husband, Jude, for thinking up most of the names.

If you are interested in having one of these original art pieces, you can contact Jill. There are also prints available.

Get The Scoop

Today, my daughter, Jill, and I took a trek to Mahone Bay. Twelve of Jill's curated pieces are gracing the walls of Get The Scoop. This Ice cream shop has the best homemade ice cream in town and Jill's art work certainly livens up the place! There will be FREE ICE CREAM for everyone who buys a piece of her art. How sweet is that!

NEW to the shop is their Sweet Boutique - kitchen & cottage ware. They are also carrying the delectable Peace by Chocolate chocolates. AND of course, these delicious flavors of ice cream. The flavors change daily.

 Enjoy!

Art Pieces

Two more 5 x 7 art pieces were finished today. Both are a combination of free-motion machine stitching and hand embroidery. The fantasy fish, in the second photo, was created from a piece of fantasy fabric that was embellished with tulle, yarns, and decorative threads.  I also used decorative yarns that remind me of an underwater garden. That is, my interpretation of what it might look like underwater.

I've also hooked up with the Needle & Thread Network. Please drop by their site to see some wonderful work.

I'm trying to finish up a few art pieces for the Christmas Craft Fair. Each one will be framed with a black metal frame ordered especially for these embroideries. Click on the photos to get a close-up view.

Under The Sea 2

I have another Under The Sea art piece finished. Again, the mat is suppose to be bright white. This time I used hand dyed cheese cloth for the lower right corner. Couched ribbon is used for the tall sea weeds with machine stitching in the background. Valdani threads (pearl 8 and stranded cotton) was used in this one. Please click on the photo for a closer look.

On another note, I have been trying to answer everyone who makes a comment here on the blog under comments. Please check there. I appreciate all your comments.

Under the Sea

My latest art piece, Under the Sea, is a combination of free motion stitching and hand embroidery. Valdani Threads were used for the fly stitch and French knots. The background is Bali Batik. The piece is custom framed 5" x 7" with a black metal frame. The mat is a bright white but I couldn't quite get it right in the photo! An unframed version is also included below.

The hardest thing, is coming up with titles for my pieces.

Susan Lee Studios

Time to highlight another Newfoundland artist, Susan Lee Stephen, jewellery designer. Susan works with silver, semi-precious stones, copper, bronze, brass and sometimes textiles to create very unique sculptural jewellery pieces. To read more about Susan's work, click on the link above.

I visited Devon House this afternoon to see the latest gallery show, Elemental Nexus. Susan is one of the featured artists. Her work is incredible! Such attention to detail . . .  You can also view some of the show pieces on her web site.

To see some other art pieces, check out Susan's profile in the Metal Arts Guild of Canada and her Etsy Shop.

Art by Jill Thirza Cooper

My daughter, Jill, just launched her new website http://jill-cooper.com, promoting her artwork. She paints mainly in acrylics on canvas, and had a showing in Chicago just before Christmas. Her originals are for sale on her site, and she will have prints available soon as well.

I like her art work and hope you do too.

Manufactured Right Here Show

Manufactured Right HereI visited the Manufactured Right Here Expo, 2014, today. A month or so ago, I was asked to show a couple of my smaller pieces in the Department of Innovation and Rural Development booth. My pieces were on the top shelf of this undulating, four tier, shelf system (they had two of them). I'm glad I didn't have to spend too much time in the booth as I'm sure I would have become sea sick!

I did manage to get a photo of the top shelf.

Also on display at the show, was the car driven by Jake Doyle (Alan Hawco), from the TV series, Republic of Doyle. This show is set in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Renske Helmuth - Trunk Show

Last month, the Cabot Quilt Guild had a surprise visitor. Renske Helmuth, Quilt Artist and Teacher was on holiday here in the city. I believe she had been on a teaching tour and stopped off here for awhile. In any event, she had enough of her work with her to have a fabulous trunk show. What an amazing collection of art work. Photos were permitted so here's the ones I managed to get. Please visit her web site for a complete profile on Renske and photos of her work.
Enjoy!

Book Review # 2

Art in Felt & Stitch - Creating Beautiful Works of Art using Fleece, Fibres and Threads by Moy Mackay, is another one of my Christmas gifts. This book is visually stunning! Moy Mackay (Scottish artist) illustrates how to create beautiful pictures using felt and stitches. She takes you on a journey from start to finish, including the materials and tools you need, in making felted pictorial art. You, too, will end up been inspired to make art!  One of my favorite pieces in the book shows how she makes her sheep - they are delightful!

Enjoy!

More Work in Progress

I've been keeping busy! When I visited the yarn shop, From Ewe to You, in Nova Scotia, I saw a cute baby hat. I bought the pattern and knit this one for baby Emma. I then decided to knit a sweater for my granddaughter, Gale. This one is off to Chicago. I sure hope it fits!

The dyed fabric was used in my latest art piece that I posted about last week. Other finished pieces can be seen on flickr. I will post a photo of the newest piece soon.

I have three fibre lace scarves finished except for the ironing. This photo shows the first one just after it was washed and dried. It still needs ironing and a bit of trimming.

The next piece is an experiment in needle felting. Again, it's not finished. I usually stitch the felt all over with Sulky Sliver threads. This will probably end up as art cards and wearable art pins. Check more needle felting on my blog HERE; HERE; HERE; and HERE.

Last, but not least, I've been working on some 3-D birds. I'm using a pattern from the 2009/2010 International Quilt Festival Magazine, Fabric Birds by Terry Grant. Here is a small art piece with a bird.

Enjoy!
