March of Mugs

I dropped down to the Quidi Vidi Plantation this afternoon to see the March of Mugs. It was a fantastic display of mugs, cup & saucers, vases, and small dishes. This event is hosted by local potter, Alexis Templeton.

The March of Mugs features the work of fourteen ceramicists from Canada and the Untied States:

Fong Choo, Louisville, Kentucky; Robin Dupont, Winlaw, British Columbia; Michael Flaherty, St. John's, Newfoundland; David Hayashida & Linda Yates, King's Point, Newfoundland; Debra Kuzyk & Ray Mackie, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia; Erin McArthur, St. John's, Newfoundland; Danny Meisinger, Gardner, Kansas; Isabella St. John, St. John's, Newfoundland; Marcelina Salazar, Chatsworth, Ontario; Michael Schael, Cambridge, Wisconsin; Wendy Shirran, St. John's, Newfoundland; Reid Schoonover, Clintonville, Wisconsin; Alexis Templeton, St. John's, Newfoundland.

It will take a couple of posts to show you all the fabulous pieces! Enjoy!!

Don't you just love the view!

The red dot means it's sold! There were lots of red dots to be seen.

March of Mugs

Today was cold but sunny. Just look at that sky! I went downtown this morning to the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation where the March of Mugs is been held this weekend. Curated by Alexis Templeton, this special gallery exhibition hosts functional and beautiful cups and mugs by exceptional and award-winning international potters and ceramic artists. To view the list of artists, please click on the March of Mugs link above. I was given permission to photograph the beautiful pottery on display. Enjoy!

Feast of Pottery

This afternoon, I visited a Feast of Pottery (see a list of participants below), at the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation. Alexis Templeton, a well known St. John's potter, has been curating this event the last several years. In fact, it looks like it will become a yearly event held on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I was given permission to take lots of photos to show to you. I will probably have to do several posts to cover the exhibition.

Here's a list of the award winning international ceramic artists featured in this show:
One piece, by David Hayashida and Linda Yates, was of particular interest, as it had a quilt hanging on a clothesline. As many of my followers are quilters, I thought this would be a fitting first piece to display. Enjoy the rest of the show and check back later for more photos. Oh, the little red dots on some pieces, means it's sold! In fact, most of the pieces have been purchased.

Icebergs

Apparently there is a bumper crop of icebergs along the Newfoundland coast this spring! It is been reported that there are at least 25 icebergs just off the coast of St. Anthony, NL. Usually there are only about 3 or 4 at this time of year. Read more about this HERE. Quidi Vidi Village in the east end of St. John's, has its own grounded iceberg. In fact, there were so many people driving down to see it that the road was closed for awhile.

A friend did manage to take some photos on Friday. Here's one of them. With warm temperatures the last few days, the 'berg' has gotten smaller. To see just how large it was, check out these two rock climbers as they reach the top of the iceberg.

Here are some interesting links relating to icebergs:

The Grumpy Goat Studio

Have you had a chance to check out The Grumpy Goat Studio blog? Cara and Pam make the most amazing wooden carvings by hand! They are whimsy, colourful and so much fun. Here's one they did for Icebergs in June, at Alexis Templeton Studios.
They are also painting their images on canvas. I like both methods of their work. Check them out!

Icebergs In June - Alexis Templeton Studio

Alexis Templeton is a potter who lives and works in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. I fell in love with her work years ago and as a result, own pieces of her work. Whenever I have company, some of her pottery makes an appearance.
Her studio's theme at the moment is Icebergs in June. As she writes on her card, "June is often when icebergs arrive on our shores - if they're going to come at all, of course. To celebrate a phenomena that never fails to take out breath away, I've invited local artists to help fill the studio with their interpretations of these majestic ice castles." The crystalline iceberg plates featured in the picture will be included too. These plates are fantastic! I will be adding one of these to my collection.
Featured Artists include
Cara and Pam of the Grumpy Goat Studio
Janet Davis' print Spring Ice, Norton's Cove Studio
King's Point Photography by David Hayashida, King's Point Pottery
Judy Cooper, Textile Designs  Iceberg Art Cards,
Christine Koch's prints Iceberg with Aurora I and II
Diana Dabinett's silk painting
Glace, Rare Iceberg water
