Rainbows

The conditions were perfect last evening for this beautiful rainbow to appear. The sky was very dramatic. If you look carefully, you will see a second rainbow just to the right of the middle tree.

Enjoy!

In LIke A Lamb!!

Welcome March! Here in St. John's, it came in like a lamb. I sure hope it doesn't go out like a lion but then, that's 30 days away. During that time we get SPRING! YAH!!! Though we can't complain about winter this year. It was a mild one here compared to last winter.

Here's some interesting sites to visit:

Out like a Lion!!!

The last day of March! It came in like a lion and is going out the same way. I don't remember a winter as harsh as this one has been. Happy Monday! Let's hope that April will be better. It doesn't look like it is going to come in like a lamb this year in St. John's.

Here's a few lion / lamb quilt related stuff:
Enjoy!
Sheep at Stonehenge (below) is the quilt I made for my granddaughter three years ago.

Sesame Street

Ages ago I saw a Sesame Street panel at Fabricville. My two year old granddaughter loves the show. Her favorite characters are on the panel so, of course, I bought it. Needless to say, it was supposed to be an easy quilt to do. I do wish that manufacturers of printed panels were as particular as quilters! There was no such thing as straight sides and there is never enough space to cut them apart on the bolt. I did manage to finally finish it yesterday. Thanks, also, to my friend, who had the perfect colour of fabric for the back and binding.

Pinned on the fence, it looks good! You can't tell that the sides aren't exactly straight. Anyway, what two year old is going to be looking for that.

Here are a few Sesame Street patterns for your enjoyment:

Flying Geese

Thanks to my niece, here is a photo of the baby quilt that I posted about yesterday. Now you can see all the little triangles that my sister cut and stitched.

Baby Quilt

I finally got a photo of the baby quilt my sister made for her first grandchild in Austin, Texas.
It's called 40 Dozen Geese Flying North for the Summer! Isn't it just beautiful, but then I'm a bit biased. It has 960 triangles which translates into 480 coloured geese. The quilt has a bamboo batting.

I remember my sister saying she used Thangles Quilting Paper to make the small triangles. That looks like an easy way to do it. You can view a demonstration of the Thangles method HERE but if you are into using traditional methods for this technique, check HERE.

The Purl Bee has a tutorial of a Mini Quilt of the Month, July: Flying Geese.
Connecting Threads also has a tutorial on Flying Geese - Make 'em Fast
These triangles are not in my future but they might be in yours!
Enjoy. . .

Gifts Given . . . Enjoy

Here are some of the things I made for Christmas gifts. The quilt is from a kit I purchased last summer at the Hobby Horse, Georgetown, Ontario. The panel caught my eye as each block has words about the sounds each object makes. It's part of the Little Genius series. The toy giraffe pattern was from Tilda's Studio by Tone Finnanger. Both were made for my little granddaughter in Chicago.

This bird was featured in a Quilting Arts Magazine. It lives in Manitoba. A similar one is in Tennessee.
I made five table toppers but I forgot to photograph the one gone to Texas.

Spring 2011

Today we had sunshine! I took a quick look around my back garden. Armed with my camera, I captured some of the bright greens of early spring! The first photo will eventually grow into soft orange Day Lilies. The Periwinkle are just beginning to bloom. Soon there will be a carpet of these flowers underneath the Globe Cedar. I can't wait for the tulips to bloom as I don't remember their colour. These haven't bloomed in a couple of years and I have no idea why.

Well, here are some flowers that will bloom all year long (if you make them):

Carrot Table Runner

The Cabot Quilt Guild just had its Spring Retreat. The quilters had a fabulous time. Of course, there is always a project to complete if one wishes to do it. This year, it was the flip and sew carrot table runner from All People Quilt.

This is one of the 21 runners made at the retreat. Aren't the orange batiks just beautiful!

Check out the Show and Tell pages for February 2011. I'm there holding my baby quilt, Sheep at Stonehenge. Our guild has a bunch of very talented quilters. Check them all out. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Happy April

Well, April is here! I hope we are done with snow. St. John's had more snow in March that the rest of the winter. Thank goodness I missed most of it as I was in Chicago and I can now get back to blogging on a regular basis. The Apple ipad is great for travel but I don't like it for blogging. I prefer to be able to add pictures and websites on a much larger monitor where I can open multiple screens and move from one to the other by one click. I do like the ipad as a photo album. Right now there are over 4000 photos on it. The latest are those of my new granddaughter (the reason I was in Chicago).
The quilt, Ducks at Stonehenge, was a hit! I have some wonderful photos of the baby on it.

Sheep at Stonehenge

I can finally tell you about the baby quilt I made since Christmas. I just delivered it. It is called Sheep at Stonehenge. You may think it a strange name for a baby quilt but I did see lots of sheep on my England trip in October, especially at Stonehenge. Also the main fabrics used are from the Stonehenge collection. The pattern is by British quilter, Lynn Edwards. I had been looking for something different and as soon as I saw this one, I knew it was the one to do. If I hadn't come across this one, I would have designed one from scratch. The sheep bodies are fleece with flannel for the faces. Everything else is cotton. I used the blanket stitch on my machine to stitch around the sheep. The flowers were hand stitched.  Free motion stippling was used to quilt it.

The sheep dog is on the back. I will embroider the baby's name and date of birth on the dog's chest when she arrives.

This is the book where I found the pattern for the above quilt. A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Lynn when she did some workshops and had a trunk show for the Cabot Quilt Guild here in St. John's.
