Book Review: Mini Wonderful Curves

This next book is Mini Wonderful Curves, 16 Seasonal Quilt Projects Using the QCR Mini, by sisters, Jenny Pedigo and Helen Robinson. Patterns include tulips, sunflowers, pinwheels, hearts, fall foliage, bats, winter tree and more . . .  The book is full of beautiful coloured photos of the quilts and the patterns. There is no guesswork on fabric placement to create each quilted project. Again, as with their previous book, One Wonderful Curve, a pictorial tutorial for using the mini version of the Quick Curve ruler, is included.

The projects include wall hangings, table runners and quilts, in a fresh contemporary style with a curved flair. Again, another book to check out.

Enjoy!

Book Review: Modern Quilt Bible

Modern Quilt Bible by Elizabeth Betts, is another new book that has been added to the Mahone Bay Quilters Guild library. It has lots of colourful photos of quilts and illustrations for piecing them. The book is divided into two sections. The first one focuses on ten design concepts and ideas for modern quilting: (or any quilting)

  1. Colour
  2. Fabric
  3. Compositional Elements
  4. Grids
  5. Negative Space
  6. Symmetry and Asymmetry
  7. Optical Effects
  8. Playing With Shapes
  9. Modern Traditionalism
  10. Making Your Way

Each one of these also includes a project to make.

The second section features techniques and step-by-step illustrations that are used to make the quilts. For example: various ways to piece together blocks (paper piecing, curved piecing), applique and then finishing of the quilt.

This book is an excellent resource for those of you who are interested in making modern quilted projects. If you are a beginner or have been quilting for a long time, it is worth a look!!

Enjoy!!

Book Review: Modern Memory Quilts

Suzanne Paquette is a modern quilter, designer, and creative director. Her book, Modern Memory Quilts, 'a handbook for capturing meaningful moments' in someone's life, contains 12 projects accompanied by stories that inspired them. These quilt projects have all the information and directions you will need to make and finish the quilt.

I find it quite helpful to go to one of the on-line book sellers and have a virtual look inside the book I'm interested in purchasing. Usually the table of contents will give you a good idea if the book is what you are looking for.

If you would like to incorporate some special clothing into a modern memory quilt, this book, with its colourful photographs, will assist you in doing this.

As she writes: 'Creating quilts made with fabric that is woven with memories and emotion is meaningful and rewarding work'.

Enjoy!!

Modern Quilting

Are you into Modern Quilting? It sure has evolved big time in the quilting world! Personally, I like the minimalist look of many of the modern quilts. Fussy doesn't appeal to me, nor does many of the traditional quilting patterns.

KISS - Keep It Simple & Stunning is how I feel about it.

My sister just sent me the link to QuiltCon 2016 with the winning quilts displayed. Also have a look at their tutorial page.

Enjoy!

Regular Joe

My husband received this quilt, from my sister, for Christmas. Joan finished it here last summer while house sitting for a few weeks. It is called Regular Joe by Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle of ModernQuiltStudio.com in American Patchwork Quilting June 2014. Check out some more Modern Quilting on Pinterest.

The view on the stair railing is the true colour. I think the light from the large window (below) washed the colour out a bit.

We both love it. Thanks Joan.

Curry Chicken

I have another lovely quilt to show you. Not mine but one my sister did as a gift for a niece who just moved into her new house. This one is called "Curry Chicken"! Don't you just love the name. Joan used Kona cotton in white and curry. To pick up the gorgeous chicken colours, she bound it in blue and backed with teal and pumpkin.

I think this is another way to highlight a piece of unusual fabric and no points to match either!
Also check out a previous post of Joan's quilts. Modern Quilting!!

Fabrics From Patch Halifax

I couldn't resist getting these fabrics from Patch Halifax the other day. They have very non traditional Christmas ones as you can see below. The lime green? Because I like that colour. I have no idea what these fat quarters will become! I'm guessing that I'm not the only one out there who purchases fabrics with no particular project in mind.

The store has lots of fabrics, books and patterns for modern quilting. If you are in the area, drop by for a visit.

Jacquie Gering, Modern Quilting

Last evening, the three guilds in our area, Eastern Edge, Cabot, and Ocean View, invited its members to a presentation of modern quilts by Jacquie Gering, a modern quilter. Over the last year or so, quilters expressed an interest in learning about modern quilting. One of the books on the subject, Quilting Modern, by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen, was purchased by several quilters and was found to be a very good source. It was decided to invite Jacquie here to teach several of her workshops. If you are interested in the ones she teaches, they are listed on her blog.

Jacquie gave a very informative talk about her evolution into the quilt world and how she got into making modern quilts. Her blog, Tallgrass Prairie Studio, is just chock a block full of her amazing quilts. Most of the quilts we saw, are on her blog. Here's a few of them. Permission was given to photograph the quilts and post them here for your viewing pleasure.

Thanks, Jacquie for a wonderful evening!

Enjoy!
