Three Churches and a Lobster

Two new shimmers have finally made it into stitch!! These make lovely window catchers and great Christmas Ornaments.
I was asked to design a shimmer of the Three Churches of Mahone Bay and a lobster. Thanks to my husband, who does all the technical drawings for the embroidery machines.

These lobsters are drying outside on the clothes line. This could never have happened in our old home in St. John's, NL as it was way too windy.  Did you know that according to a documentary by CBC Radio a few years ago, St. John's is the third windiest city on the planet? Not what I would want to be famous for, that's for sure.  I actually bought my first out door garment without a hood, when I moved here to Nova Scotia.

Afternoon Tea by The Sea

For the last couple of months, I have been organizing the Mahone Bay Quilt Guild's 'Afternoon Tea by The Sea'.  For years, the guild has been having dessert parties, held in the evening. This year, they voted to have an afternoon tea with sandwiches and sweets. Of course, there is always a special guest.

The guild invites an 'Extraordinary Guest Quilter' to give workshops and have a presentation and trunk show. This year, Elaine Quehl, quilt artist, teacher, dyer and designer, from Ottawa, is our special guest. Elaine will be hosted by a guild member, taken to visit local businesses and introduced to the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Besides her presentation of work, Elaine is also bringing some of her patterns and hand dyed fabrics to sell. We look forward to her workshops on Thursday to Saturday.

Having moved to Nova Scotia a year last October, and been a new guild member, I felt that by volunteering to do this job, I would get to know the ladies in the guild. That has certainly happened as I'm working with a bunch of very friendly, helpful 'gals'! No one is too busy to answer questions or to meet with me to discuss procedures etc. Emails have been flying this week! I thank everyone very much.

Lots of ladies stepped up to volunteer for jobs: from getting donations from shops for gifts, working in the kitchen, greeting visitors, sending out memos, taking photographs, getting husbands to help out, making surprise table displays, setting up the tables, making sandwiches and sweets . . . the list goes on! Once everything is ready for the sit down tea, the quilters take their seats as their job is done and the Legion Ladies take over.

London-Wul Fibre Arts Studio

Usually by this time of the year, I would have created a whole bunch of new Fibre Lace Scarves for the two fairs I attend in St. John's, NL. Because of our recent move to Nova Scotia, all that was put on hold. I have spent four weekends checking out the various Christmas Fairs in Halifax and thinking about what I might like to do next year.

However, my mind is still in planning mode. I have been visiting yarn and fabric shops as I never know what might trigger an idea. A couple of weekends ago, I visited London-Wul Fibre Arts Studio which just opened in Mahone Bay. This store and studio is owned by Heidi Wulfraat of Woolworks Studio. If you are interested in yarns, fibre and fabrics (small collection), then this is a definite destination to make in Mahone Bay.

These will eventually be used in Fibre Lace Scarves, Needle Felted Pendants and Needle Felted Ornaments.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving and Other Stuff

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all my relatives and friends, near and far. The rest of our belongings arrived today so we are officially moved to Pine Grove, Nova Scotia. Our house in St. John's, NL is now for sale.

I took a drive to Mahone Bay yesterday afternoon. It's 16.5 km from my house along a country road. The fall colours are gorgeous! I love summer  but autumn foliage wins. I stopped a couple of times to take photos but the road is narrow with hardly any shoulder for parking.

 

A new book store just opened up in Mahone Bay called An Novel Idea. This bookstore caters to book lovers and writers. They carry a diverse selection of books, stationery products, and unique literary gifts.

The Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival was last weekend but the scarecrows will be on display for most of the month. Check HERE for the photos I posted last year. Here's a couple from this year:

Moving

Moving day is getting closer! This weekend I'll be heading to my new home in Nova Scotia. Sure, I'll miss my friends, going to the quilt and embroidery guilds, and much more (NOT the wind) but I will be with family, especially a six year old. So new adventures are definitely in my future!

I was just reading that Heidi Wulfraat WoolWorks Studio will be opening soon in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. See, I'm not the only one off exploring new places. Have you seen Heidi's scrumptious yarns and felting fibres? Can't wait to visit their new location.

Last Day of Summer!

It was 27C and sunny here in Nova Scotia today. I spent the afternoon in Mahone Bay where the town is getting ready for its 20th Scarecrow Festival. Have a look at a few photos of many that I took. I think the former kindergarten teacher in me is evident in a few of these. There are also lots of pirates, fishermen, and traditional type scarecrows to see. If you are in the area, drop by.

I'm also attending the Mahone Bay Quilters, Piecemakers by the Sea, Quilt Show on Friday.
